The Art of Coaching: Effective Strategies for School Transformation by Elena Aguilar
So far, I am loving this book. It is practical and the politics are legit. She argues for transformational coaching, which aims to affect change in three areas:
1. individuals
2. institutions
3. educational and social systems
She argues for using six lenses to examine schools:
1. Inquiry
2. change management
3. systems thinking
4. adult learning
5. systemic oppression
6. emotional intelligence
She calls this the Coach's Optical Refractor which is the only moment in the book where the lingo gets a little cheesy-teacher-y for me. Otherwise, I found this book refreshingly critical, practical, and inspiring. It makes me want to be a teacher coach and it gives me hope for the work people are doing in Minneapolis.
