What can Pakeha learn from engaging in kaupapa Maori educational research? by Alex Barnes I really wanted to like this article. I think the topic is really important and I found the personal stories engaging. Unfairly, I was hoping to learn more about what, exactly, kaupapa Mauri research really is... but the author made clear from the beginning that this was not the focus of the paper. After getting over that I really wanted the question to be answered-- what can Pakeha learn from doing this kind of research? I feel like I never got the answer. What I did get was further context for political issues in education in New Zealand and for how Pakeha and Maori people work together (or reasons they don't). For this reason, it was a worthwhile read, but I wouldn't suggest it to anyone hoping to pick up specifics of how to do kaupapa Maori research or what, specifically, one would get out of it. |
